U.S. Olympic Gymnastics Team trials

June 20, 2008

Men

Making the team: The top two all-around finishers qualify for the six-member Olympic team as long as they place in the top three in three of the six events. Results are weighted from the nationals (40 percent) and trials (60 percent). The complete team will be announced within 24 hours of the trials' end.

Olympic gymnastics team trials

Where: Wachovia Center, Philadelphia.

TV tomorrow: 1:30 p.m. and 8 p.m., Channel 7/39.

TV Sunday: 7 p.m., Channel 7/39.

Olympics

Aug. 8-24 in Beijing. Gymnastics scheduled Aug. 9-19.

Notable: Paul Hamm, the 2004 all-around Olympic champion, isn't competing as he recovers from an injured hand but is still expected to be named to the team. The field is deep and open. David Sender, who won the men's national all-around title last month, injured his ankle before Wednesday's training session and withdrew from last night's competition.

WOMEN

Making the team: The top two all-around finishers of the two-day competition automatically make the six-member Olympic team. Additional gymnasts could be named to the team Sunday. The final roster will be determined after a selection camp July 16-20 at New Waverly, Texas.

Notable: Nastia Liukin and Shawn Johnson, the world and national all-around champion, are favorites to earn the automatic berths. It's a friendly rivalry: They've been hanging out together in Philadelphia, and Liukin sent a text message of support after Johnson's Iowa gym was flooded last week.
