Moon Walk: Join Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography for a full-moon walk on Scripps Pier from 7 to 9:30 p.m. July 15 and Aug. 15. The Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier, usually closed to the public, is used by scientists, students and aquarium staff for a variety of research projects. During the moonlit walk, aquarium naturalists will teach participants about the structure's history and guide them as they dissect a squid, make marine organisms glow in the dark, collect plankton and more. A tour of the Scripps Oceanography campus and a special souvenir are also included. Ages 9 and older; $20 for adults and $17 for children younger 18. R.S.V.P. required; (858) 534-7336.
Puppet show: “Big Joe's Fireworks” will be presented at 11 a.m., 1 and 2:30 p.m. July 2-6 at the Marie Hitchcock Puppet Theater, 2130 Pan American Place, Balboa Park. Big Joe joins celebrity friends Uncle Sam and Yankee Doodle, with patriotic music and dancing with the story “The Remarkable Rocket.” Cost: $5 adults, $4 ages 65 and older, and $3 for children ages 2 and older. Solo concert: Twelve-year-old singing sensation Francis Florendo will bring his full stage show, including the Starshine Dancers, to the Coronado Playhouse at 2 p.m. July 20. Florendo is a student at Hedenkamp Elementary School who has won several singing competitions. The Playhouse is located at 1835 Strand Way, Coronado.
