The San Diego Union-Tribune

By The Numbers

– COMPILED BY JANE CLIFFORD

June 28, 2008

50

That's how old the Hula Hoop is. More than 100 million hoops were sold in its first year after its launch on June 19, 1958. When popularity began to fade, Wham-O re-launched the product in 1965 with several ball bearings trapped inside its hollow tubing to create the “Shoop-Shoop” Hula-Hoop. It since has evolved to become a method of exercise and is now an activity on Nintendo's Wii Fit.

HOST FAMILIES NEEDED

Cultural Homestay International is hard at work – and running out of time – to match students to host families for its summer program. If you can invite a foreign student into your home for the program, which begins July 15, please contact the group. Visit chinet.org to learn more. To volunteer as a host family, contact Area Administrator Darla Cherry at chidarla@chinet.org or call (877) 906-9852.
