Emmy Short List: “The Wire” and More!

June 28, 2008

Better late than never. And better close than not at all. For the first time in Emmy history, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences released the list of the Top 10 comedies and the Top 10 dramas competing for Emmy nominations. And glory be, “The Wire” is on Thursday's list.

Recent excerpts from the TV Tracker blog. Talk back at uniontrib.com/tvtracker/.
After years of being snubbed, the stellar HBO drama might get the best-drama nomination it has always deserved. The list goes to blue-ribbon committees for evaluation, so we won't know if “Wire” justice has been served until the nominations are announced July 17. In the meantime, here are the top 10 drama and comedy finalists. I'm sure there are outrages in there somewhere.

Top 10 Drama Series Finalists: “Boston Legal,” “Damages,” “Dexter,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Grey's Anatomy,” “House,” “Lost,” “Mad Men,” “The Tudors,” “The Wire.”

Top 10 Comedy Series Finalists: “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” “Entourage,” “Family Guy,” “Flight of the Conchords,” “The Office,” “Pushing Daisies,” “30 Rock,” “Two and a Half Men,” “Ugly Betty,” “Weeds.”

“So You Think You Can Dance”: Top 16

Welcome to “So You Think You Can Dance,” the only compelling reason to watch TV until “Burn Notice” starts July 10.

Anyway, we're down to eight couples, and the show still takes two hours. Is it because Cat's hair was too massive to fit in a one-hour time slot? Because surely Fox doesn't need an extra hour to tell us that Twitch sounds like a bear when he laughs and Mark's pinkies are crooked.

Those were some of the dim gems that emerged during Wednesday night's time-wasting interviews, which had the dancers telling us what we don't know about their partners. Frankly, Mary's mirror-ball dress was a lot more illuminating.
