San Francisco sued over handgun ban

June 28, 2008
SAN FRANCISCO – The National Rifle Association sued the city of San Francisco yesterday to overturn its ban on handguns in public housing, a day after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a handgun ban in the nation's capital.
The legal action follows a similar lawsuit against the city of Chicago over its handgun ban, filed within hours of Thursday's high court ruling. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom said the city will “vigorously fight the NRA” and defended the ban as good for public safety.

Plane's data tag baffled controllers
LOS ANGELES – A new aircraft designation tag has been blamed for the assignment of an All Nippon Airways Boeing 777-300 jetliner to a too-short Los Angeles International Airport taxiway.
The Federal Aviation Administration said the All Nippon jetliner arriving from Tokyo on June 19 had a “B77W” data designation tag. The new international designation wasn't recognized by airport controllers on June 19. FAA spokesman Ian Gregor said it appears no one in the Los Angeles tower knew what the new B77W data tag meant. Gregor said the pilot was directed to a taxiway too short to handle the massive aircraft, causing part of the plane to protrude 5 feet into the 205-foot safety zone around one of the northern runways.
An American Airlines MD-83 aircraft then landed on the north airfield and rolled past the All Nippon Airways plane.
