THE SKINNY
Baek, 28, will be making his first start against the team that brought him to the United States in 1999 from South Korea. Baek was 0-1 with a 5.40 ERA in 10 appearances (one start) with the Mariners before being acquired by the Padres in a trade for right-handed pitcher Jared Wells on May 28.
Baek will be making his fifth start since moving into the rotation on June 2 to fill in for injured Shawn Estes (broken thumb). Baek is 0-2 at Petco Park with a 5.94 ERA, the highest mark on the staff among all who have thrown more than 11 innings.
Silva, 29, will be facing the Padres for the first time since June 17, 2005. He is 1-0 with a 3.44 ERA in seven appearances (two starts) against the Padres. Silva is winless over his last 12 starts (0-9, 7.35 ERA), the longest streak in the majors this season.
