PUBLIC EYE | Week in review
Showered with gifts

June 29, 2008

A baby shower was held for a very pregnant Minnie Driver at a friend's Malibu home last weekend. Friends and family gathered round the 38-year-old British-born singer/actress to celebrate the impending birth of her first child, which is due this summer.

According to People.com, the house was decorated with pink and white peonies and guests drank basil lemonade and nibbled on finger sandwiches and berry cake from Sweet Lady Jane. Driver received a variety of gifts, while guests hand-painted baby onesies for the new arrival and signed personal notes in a book to be given to the mum-to-be.

A pal of Driver's says, “It was a beautiful day.”

Driver announced her pregnancy on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno in March, but has so far refused to reveal the identity of the unborn tot's father other than to say he is English and “sort of in the same business.” The two do not plan to marry.

Now, that's P.R.

Just to prove it is not a rapacious, money-grubbing, heartless vulture of a megabucks corporation that feeds off the common man's hopes and dreams, Columbia Pictures has come up with a dilly of a public-relations plan. The studio has announced it will pay off the mortgage of one lucky family.

Hancock's Helping Hand Mortgage Payoff Contest is being offered in keeping with the spirit of Columbia's upcoming flick, “Hancock.” The action-comedy starring Will Smith is about a misunderstood superhero who is encouraged to improve his public image when he meets a good-hearted P.R. exec.

Columbia Pictures will pay off the mortgage debt of one family, with a grand prize worth up to $360,000. To enter and find the official contest rules, log on to hancockmovie.com. Entrants must write a 200-word essay explaining why they are deserving of the grand prize. The contest runs through July 6.

“Hancock” opens in theaters Wednesday.

ENHANCED?

Cynthia Nixon of “Sex and the City” fame denies a New York Post report that she has had breast-enhancement surgery, says the New York Daily News.

“We got a call from (The Post) asking if I'd had breast augmentation, and my publicist laughed at them and said, 'No, of course not.' But they printed it anyway,” Nixon said. “If I was going to get a boob job, wouldn't it make sense that I'd get it before 'Sex and the City?' ”

So how could the Post get it wrong?

“I was at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital for my three-monthly checkup,” said Nixon, who is a breast cancer survivor. “I was in the Oncology Department. I guess they think that means 'plastic surgery.' ”

Coming clean

“That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard,” says “High School Musical” star Vanessa Hudgens about rumors that her boyfriend and co-star Zac Efron prefers not to shower. Or bathe. Ever.

“Whoever came up with that is completely idiotic,” Hudgens tells Newsweek. “He showers! He showers! Believe me, he does.”

The 19-year-old star also has some sage advice on love and relationships.

“If you really love someone, you shouldn't have to work at it,” the actress tells Cosmo Girl! for its July/August issue. “You finish each other's sentences and have the same sense of humor.”
