The Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act are passed to protect consumers from adulterated food, drugs and cosmetics. The legislation follows the publication of Upton Sinclair's “The Jungle,” which exposed atrocities in Chicago's meatpacking industry.

Tomorrow: A state law prohibiting drivers from using hand-held cell phones goes into effect. Most law enforcement agencies will not offer a grace period.

Friday: Lemon Grove will celebrate the 80th birthday of “The Big Lemon,” the city's iconic, 3,500-pound lemon at Lemon Grove Avenue and Broadway. Ribbon cutting, with free lemon drops, lollipops and balloons, will be at 10 a.m. in front of the lemon.

Sunday: The San Diego County Fair ends. Gates are open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Grounds remain open until about midnight. Information: sdfair.com
