Environmentalists challenge report's call to eat more fish

Clean-water activists yesterday challenged a new state report that encouraged people to eat more fish because the health benefits generally outweigh the risks of getting cancer or other diseases.
The advisory applies to fish caught in California waters, such as those hooked from piers along San Diego County's coastline to species reeled in by sportfishing boats. It was issued Friday by the Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment, which analyzes the dangers of numerous toxins.

A nearly 30-year-old mystery surrounding a Marine found slain in her barracks came to an end yesterday when her killer was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison.
Michael Johnson said nothing to the judge who sent him away for killing 19-year-old Suesette Bluing.
In March, Johnson pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and admitted he intentionally stabbed Bluing 38 times.

Cindy McCain oversees the trust that owns a La Jolla Shores condo occupied by her elderly aunt. Until Friday, the annual property taxes had not been paid for four years.

Caltrans officials are reviewing a federal judge's decision ordering it to reinstate an Adopt-A-Highway permit for the San Diego Minutemen to conduct highway shoulder cleanups on Interstate 5 next to the Border Patrol's San Clemente checkpoint.
A spokesman for Caltrans did not say yesterday whether an appeal is being considered, only that legal counsel is reviewing the judge's decision today and will be discussing it this week with Caltrans Director Will Kempton.
