The San Diego Union-Tribune

Padres review

July 3, 2008

TURNING POINT

The Rockies were leading 2-1 when Garrett Atkins hit a three-run homer with two out in the second.

KEY FACTOR

Padres starter Randy Wolf walked four of the first 11 batters he faced, and all four contributed to the Rockies' first five runs. The first two walks loaded the bases in front of Atkins' single in the first. The next two represented the first two runs the Rockies scored in the second inning.

PLAYERS OF THE GAME

Offense: Garrett Atkins drove in four runs with a single and homer in the first two innings and doubled off the center-field wall directly into a 30-mph wind in the seventh.

Pitching:Ubaldo Jimenez followed the lead of Aaron Cook and pounded the strike zone against the Padres, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over 6 1/3 innings.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

Over the past three nights in Denver, Padres relievers worked 11 1/3 innings and gave up one run – Yorvit Torrealba's eighth-inning homer off Carlos Guevara last night – on five hits and walked two.

The three Padres starters, meantime, gave up 19 runs on 20 hits and 10 walks in 13 2/3 innings – an ERA of 12.51.

The problems at Coors Field followed a recent pattern for Padres starters, who have given up 38 runs in 38 2/3 innings in the club's past eight games.

WHO'S HOT

Chase Headley: His fourth homer in 15 games produced the Padres' run last night. He has an eight-game hitting streak, with one hit in each game (8-for-31, one double, two homers, three RBI).

Yorvit Torrealba: The Rockies' catcher had a double and a homer, scored twice and stretched his hitting streak to eight games.

WHO'S NOT

Randy Wolf: The left-hander has lost his past four starts and has an 8.31 ERA over that span. In addition to allowing 26 hits, Wolf has issued 15 walks in his past 17 1/3 innings after issuing only 17 in his previous 49.

– BILL CENTER

BY THE NUMBERS

2 – Over the past three seasons, there have been only two complete games in the majors pitched with fewer than 80 pitches – both by Aaron Cook against the Padres at Coors Field. The second one came Tuesday.

10 1/3 – Consecutive scoreless innings for the Padres' bullpen in Denver before Yorvit Torrealba homered off Carlos Guevara in the eighth last night.

11 – Times Kevin Kouzmanoff has been hit by a pitch this season, two short of the club record set by Gene Tenace in 1977.
