ALBUM REVIEW
Ry Cooder | “I, Flathead” Nonesuch Records

July 3, 2008

The last of Cooder's California Trilogy, “I, Flathead” is an eclectic gathering of 14 tracks, collectively telling the fictional tale of honky-tonk salt-flats racer Kash Buk. Packaged with a 90-page novella from Cooder, “I, Flathead” mixes country ballads, mariachi-accented rave-ups and straight rock 'n' roll.

It's a mix that should (but probably won't) bring a Grammy nod for album of the year for Cooder. As the writer, producer and primary musician, Cooder offers a perfect look into why the guitarist is so universally respected.
