Masters of sand make sculptures worth a long look

Thousands of people strolled in the sand at Imperial Beach over the weekend to view the entries in the U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition, one of the largest of its kind in the country. Groups from around the United States and Canada enter the competition.

The winners in the Masters A category were I.B. Posse, while the Sand Squirrels won the Masters B category. A group called Si Se Puede won in the Best Sculpture division, while the Bradley family won in the Best Replica division.

The Castles of Your Mind division was won by the Tree Amigos; Leak Control won the Executive Sandbox division; and Sand Wallowers won the Creatures of the Sea category.

Winners from the Kids N' Kastles contest, run Saturday by the Optimist Club of Imperial Beach, were Krabby Stars in the Creatures of the Sea division; Kings of the Castle in the Sandcastle category; and Sand Shockers in the Best Sculpture category.
