McCain's commitment on immigration clear
It's often said that immigration is just one of the issues that Latinos care about, along with the economy, education and the Iraq war. Perhaps. But given what happened at the National Council of La Raza's 40th annual conference this week in San Diego, immigration is not far down the list.

Trustee should quit
Acle's ethical breach must not be tolerated
Given the extent of his outrageous misconduct in his 2005-06 City Council campaign, Luis Acle should resign immediately as a trustee of the San Diego Unified School District. If he won't have the decency to quit, a concerted campaign to get him to change his mind should start forthwith – even if he only has a few months left on his term.

Twenty years ago, America's savings and loans went on a spree offering high interest rates to attract federally insured deposits. When times were good, S&L shareholders reaped the benefits. When things went bad, taxpayers eventually ended up spending $100 billion to shore up those institutions. History may be about to repeat itself.
