Over the weekend, a national news story caught North County's fading black eye – and poked it again. As the Bush administration winds down, petitions for pardons are spiking, it seems. Roughly 2,300 felons – some famous, most not – are seeking clemency.

El Cajon and La Mesa city officials will ask the voters for a sales tax increase to help solve an ongoing fiscal crisis that threatens services in both East County cities.

Dr. Ruth Larson, a dermatologist who was elected to the five-member board in 2004, said she's stepping down because Palomar College is in good hands and she wants more time to travel and take care of her 94-year-old mother.

A former downtown Oceanside strip club could become the newest home for the California Surf Museum if the city redevelopment agency decides to spend $575,000 to fix up the empty storefront.

The Chula Vista City Council delayed a decision last night on asking voters to broaden a telecommunications tax.
One councilman disagreed with the measure, and another thought a last-minute change was improperly noticed to the public.
