The San Diego Union-Tribune

  • Letters to the editor
Regarding “Probe: Police dog died of heatstroke” (Our Region, July 23): Why is San Diego Police Officer Paul Hubka still on the payroll? Desk job or not, he does not deserve to be a member of the SDPD. He left a fellow “officer” to die.

  • DAVID S. BRODER    THE WASHINGTON POST
Recent events prove cruel to McCain
It made no sense when Barack Obama left the country on his nine-day overseas tour for some of my fellow columnists to describe it as a high-risk venture. Foreign leaders, who can read the polls as well as anyone, would go out of their way not to embarrass a man who may, six months from now, be president of the United States.

  • ROBERT NOVAK    CHICAGO SUN-TIMES
    Unmoved by military voting scandal
Rep. Roy Blunt, the House Republican whip, on July 8 introduced a resolution demanding that the Defense Department better enable U.S. military personnel overseas to vote in the November elections. That act was followed by silence.

  • Been there, done that on state budget
Three weeks into the new fiscal year, California remains without a state budget. Republican lawmakers have rejected the budget approved by the Democratic majority of the two-house budget conference committee, but they have failed to say what they would cut to avoid the tax increase proposed by the Democratic leadership.

  • On water, farmers doing their share
For most San Diegans, the current water supply shortage situation is still just a headline in a newspaper, a water-saving slogan on radio or a bill-stuffer asking us to please conserve by taking the “20 Gallon Challenge.”

  • LEONARD PITTS JR.    THE MIAMI HERALD
    Slavery in 20th-century America
This is how John Davis became a slave: He was walking one evening from the train depot in Goodwater, Ala., when a white man appeared in the road. “N-----,” he demanded, “have you got any money?”

  • Today on SignOnRadio
At 11 a.m., FlashReport founder and publisher Jon Fleischman will talk state politics on “Radio Active” with Union-Tribune editorial writer Chris Reed.
