DENVER – Sen. Barack Obama stepped triumphantly into history last night as the first black American to win a major-party presidential nomination while thousands of Democrats transformed their convention hall into a joyful, shouting celebration. Competing chants of “Obama!” and “Yes, we can!” surged up from the convention floor when the outcome was announced.

Plan lets car insurance be charged by the mile

Californians soon may be able to buy pay-as-you-drive auto insurance that links premiums more closely with miles driven and provides an incentive to drive less. The proposal has raised concerns among privacy advocates who worry that ubiquitous “black boxes” in cars could give insurers information on speed and times of day on the road.
